PROPEL SCHOOLS ANNOUNCES FIRST CHARTER SCHOOL VARSITY FOOTBALL PROGRAM IN SOUTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA

PITTSBURGH, PA – MARCH 11, 2026  – Propel Schools proudly announced today that it will serve as the host school for its varsity football co-op, effective Fall 2026. This pivotal transition establishes Propel as the only charter school in Southwestern Pennsylvania to operate its own varsity football program, marking a significant milestone.

After four successful years as a guest school in the partnership with Imani Christian Academy, Propel now assumes full leadership of the program. This new role grants Propel the ability to directly shape the football co-op's operations, culture, and long-term development, ensuring alignment with the charter school network’s core educational philosophy.

“This moment represents years of dedicated growth and unwavering commitment from our scholars and staff,” said Coach LaRoi Johnson. “As the host school, we now possess the ability to build a football program rooted in discipline, accountability and opportunity for every scholar-athlete. We are building more than just a team; we are building future leaders.”

The transition reinforces Propel’s commitment to whole-child education, ensuring students have access to robust academic programs alongside competitive and character-building athletics.

Propel Schools CEO/Superintendent Dr. Tina Chekan emphasized the broader significance of the co-op transition.

“This transition reflects Propel’s continued investment in scholar-athletes and in creating dynamic spaces where students can truly thrive academically, socially and competitively,” Chekan remarked. “Athletics are a critical component of how we cultivate confident, capable leaders who are ready to make a meaningful difference in the world.”

Propel Schools Athletic Director Deborah Rambharose highlighted the expanded opportunities that will become available to scholars, both during their high school careers and as they plan for their futures.

“Our athletics programs are powerful catalysts that open doors for our scholars,” Rambharose said. “From fostering leadership development and enhancing college recruitment prospects to imparting life skills and providing mentorship, this co-op strengthens pathways after graduation and expands what’s possible for our scholars.”

As the host school, Propel will oversee program management, scheduling, facilities coordination, and long-term development for the football co-op.

The Propel Varsity Football program will compete during the Fall 2026-2027 season, with intensive preparations already underway.
